COAL GROVE — Jordan Porter had 10 rebounds, but none were as big as her last one.

Sydnee Hall drove the lane with less than six seconds to play and her shot fell off to the side. Porter grabbed the rebound and put up a shot that went through the basket just before the final buzzer.

The basket lifted the Chesapeake Lady Panthers to a 40-39 Ohio Valley Conference win over the Coal Grove Lady Hornets on Thursday.

“We told Sydnee to drive and she got off a shot. We were fortunate that Porter got the rebound and put it back in,” said Chesapeake coach Chris Ball.

Porter hit a free throw to tie the game at 38, but Ashley Adkins made a free throw that put Coal Grove back on top at 39-38.

Chesapeake (8-5, 1-3) then called a timeout with six seconds left to set up the final play.

The Lady Panthers were 10 of 15 from the foul line while Coal Grove was just 8 of 16.

“After the first quarter, we settled into our defense. It wasn’t a great offensive performance, but it was good enough to win,” said Ball. “We hit some foul shots that we haven’t hit in the past few games. That was big.”

Adkins had 5 points in the first quarter as Coal Grove took a 13-8 lead. Porter had 6 points for the Lady Panthers.

Kaylee Curry scored 6 points in the second quarter as Chesapeake rallied to take a 21-17 lead at the half.

The Lady Hornets climbed to within 28-27 after three quarters. Adkins scored 7 points in the fourth quarter including 4 of 5 at the line, but Hall and Porter scored 5 points each to counter Adkins’ effort.

Porter had 14 points to go with her 10 rebounds and 3 steals. Hall had 9 points and 6 steals, Kaylee Curry had 7 points and 10 rebounds, and Anna Mayo finished with 6 rebounds, 3 steals and 2 assists.

“We got some good minutes from our bench. Anna Mayo made some key contributions,” said Ball.

Adkins scored 12 points to lead the Lady Hornets (8-5, 2-3). Morgan Sites had 8 points and Jacy Jones scored 7.

Coal Grove is at Oak Hill on Saturday. Chesapeake visits Gallipolis on Monday.
