Each year, the Briggs Lawrence County Public Library takes on a holiday project that makes needy persons across our communities a little warmer at Christmastime. Today, that project begins for this season. All library locations will collect mittens through Dec. 18 for the library’s Mitten Tree.

Patrons may also donate socks, caps, earmuffs, gloves and scarves, for those items help keep people warm, too.

Items for children are welcome, but remember, the elderly often need a gift of warmth as well as our young ones.

As an incentive for donating mittens and other warm articles of clothing, the library will forgive the overdue fines patrons may have accumulated with library books.

Yet, clearing your name from the overdue book list should not be the sole reason to search through closets and drawers for an extra toboggan or mitten to donate or a reason to make that extra Christmas purchase when we hit the malls.

As members of civilized society, we should all consider the plight of our fellow human beings, our friends and neighbors – some of whom live next door.

Christmas truly is the season of giving.

We should give from our heart and spread what warmth we can around for all to cherish.
