River Valley Health System unveiled its new, state-of-the-art helicopter landing pad on Tuesday.

"River Valley now has the best landing pad and site in the area," said Clinton Burley of Healthnet Aeromedical Services.

The new landing pad is located on the Scott Street side of the hospital between South Eighth and South Ninth streets.

Site preparation and construction was done entirely by the hospital’s maintenance staff, including department head Paul Carmon and employees Chris Rogers, Lance Haney, James Delawder, Eddie Primm and Terry Minord.

During dedication ceremonies, RVHS CEO Terry Vanderhoof thanked Ironton Mayor Bob Cleary and members of city council for approving legislation to close the portion of Scott Street between South Eighth and South Ninth. The closure provided needed clearance for medical helicopters to land.

"We have worked closely with Healthnet Aeromedical Services and Southeast Ohio Emergency Medical Services (SEOEMS) and others to expedite the transport of those who would benefit by transfer to a trauma center," Vanderhoof said. "The location of the new landing area will allow for more efficient transport and for more privacy for our patients and families."

Vanderhoof said the helicopter landing site is a continuation of the hospital’s ongoing enhancement program, which also includes the new state-of-the-art diagnostic imaging center, new emergency room program and critical intensive care unit.
