WILLOW WOOD — Today’s math lesson is four quarters equal one whole game.

Symmes Valley Lady Vikings’ coach Brandon Walker said his team plays well for part or most of a game. The problem the Lady Vikings have experienced is playing all four quarters.

The Lady Vikings had the same problem on Saturday in a 57-48 loss to the South Gallia Lady Rebels.

Symmes Valley fell behind by more than 20 points before battling back in the fourth quarter only to fall short.

“We fought back and cut the lead to five, but then we had to start fouling. We have to play four quarters. The second quarter killed us but the third quarter hurt because we only scored six points,” said Walker.

Kaitlyn Payne scored 15 points and Kalli Hunt had a big game with 13 points, 14 rebounds, 4 steals and 3 assists for the Lady Vikings (7-11).

Rachel Johnson scored 17 and Meghan Caldwell 14 for South Gallia (15-4).

South Gallia took a 17-13 lead in the first quarter as Johnson and Lesley Small combined for 11 points. Hunt had 6 points for Symmes Valley.

South Gallia outscored Symmes Valley 20-9 in the second quarter to go up 37-22 at the half. Payne had 6 of the Lady Vikings’ 9 points.

Payne had the lone Symmes Valley field goal in the third quarter and South Gallia extended its lead to 49-28.

The Lady Vikings mounted a comeback in the fourth quarter as Gracie Waddell scored all 6 of her points and Hunt and Payne scored 4 points each.

But Mikayla Poling sank three foul shots to help the Lady Rebels hang onto their lead.

“We played well in the fourth quarter, but we were too far down,” said Walker.

Symmes Valley hosts Rock Hill on Monday.
