The South Point School District has come a long way in the past six years, going from “inauditable” to having a clean financial report from the state of Ohio.

This is certainly good news for the taxpayers in the district who should now feel more comfortable that public funds are being spent wisely, that there are clear records and that the district is being held accountable for providing the best possible education to its students.

The district received this high honor from auditor of state Dave Yost last week for the second straight year, joining a select group of other districts from the hundreds throughout the state, including the Lawrence County Educational Service Center, another great accomplishment for the county.

But based on where it came from, this is a tremendous honor and the district should be proud of the tremendous effort by Treasurer Tresa Baker, superintendent Ken Cook and other administrators who often work behind the scenes to make schools function as efficiently as possible. No publicly funded agency or school district is perfect, but it is important that every effort is made to

Public education cannot succeed without transparency and accountability. South Point appears to be working hard to achieve both.
