CHESAPEAKE – Without gaining a first down, the Chesapeake Panthers ran up 22 points in the first six minutes and cruised to a 59-6 win over South Point Friday.

The Panthers, 9-0 3-0, earned at least a share of the Ohio Valley Conference title with Coal Grove the last obstacle to an outright championship.

Chesapeake has a chance at an undefeated regular season for the first time since 1961.

"Our seniors have done the job all year," said Panther coach Phil Davis. "We were a little scared of them coming in. We knew they had some good athletes and had been playing better. We told our kids to get on them right away."

Josh Waugh and Robby Isaacs each had three touchdowns for the Panthers. Waugh had 101 yards on the ground and as a team they gained 300 yards rushing. Andy Clark threw for 82 yards with three touchdown passes.

David Chapman led the Pointers, 3-6 2-2, with 41 yards rushing on nine carries and Shane Holsinger added 40 yards on 12 tries.

As good football teams do, Chesapeake took advantage of few breaks right away to ease ahead of the Pointers.

Waugh took the opening kickoff 80 yards for the first score. Isaacs showed his versatility by scooping up an errant snap on the point after, rolling out at the 20-yard line and hitting Waugh in the corner of the end zone for the conversion.

South Point could not advance the chains and set up to punt. The snap was low and punter Coleman Gorby was tackled at the 8-yard line.

Three plays later Chris Dillon burst through for a 7-yard touchdown run at 9:03. Isaacs made the point after making it 15-0.

South Point picked up a couple of first downs but Smith was picked off when Isaacs batted a ball, made a nifty catch and took it 55 yards for the touchdown. He again added the point after making it 22-0 with 6:41 left in the first quarter.

On its next possession, Chesapeake scored again when Waugh hit a wide open Isaacs in the end zone for a 14-yard touchdown making the score 29-0 at the 1:33 mark of the first quarter. "We have some big play players and they took advantage of a few breaks tonight," Davis said.

Chesapeake was more conventional in scoring on its next drive by going 72 yards in 12 plays. Clark again hit Isaacs this time on a leaping grab over two defenders in the end zone making it 36-0.

Following a safety the Panthers put the issue at rest when Clark hit Waugh with a 34-yard scoring pass with 1:30 left in the half. Isaacs point after made it 45-0 at the half.

South Point got on the board to start the third quarter when Jarod Smith hit Justin Eaches from 20 yards out making it 45-6.

Waugh’s final touchdown came on an 85-yard scamper down the sidelines seeming to out run several defenders angling at him.

Chesapeake added one final score on a 29-yard run from Jason Brammer.

Chesapeake will travel to Coal Grove next week and South Point will host Oak Hill.
