There are some people who might think that having 13 candidates for four seats on the Ironton Board of Education is a bad sign not only for the November General Election, but for the future of the school district.

They are wrong. In fact, nothing could be further from the truth. The tragedy would be if there were only a few viable candidates who had tossed their hats into the ring.

The city has an embarrassment of riches this year. There are a number of people running for seats on the board who have more than proven their fitness to serve. Choosing will be the tough part.

Having a lot of people interested in the education the city’s children receive shows that citizens are listening when experts tell them that schools all over the country need interest from parents and the community to succeed.

Add to that a willingness to give up some of their own rather limited free time and you have a sign that this community has made education a priority.

During the next month, you will be hearing many proposals about what is best for the future of Ironton schools. Weigh each statement carefully and then choose the candidates you feel will best represent those ideals.

And then, after the election is over, offer your own services at your child’s school and make your own contribution.
