McDERMOTT – The Northwest Mohawks used their ground game to pull away in the second half and outscore the South Point Pointers 43-27 Friday in a non-league game.

Northwest, 2-3, led just 15-6 at the half and 22-13 after three quarters.

The winless Pointers (0-5) battled the Mohawks with their best rushing effort of the season. They gained 173 yards on the ground with David Chapman picking up 58 yards on 12 carries. Quarterback Jarrod Smith was 5 of 23 for 68 yards for one touchdown.

The Mohawks took an 8-0 lead in the first quarter on an 18-yard run by Dwayne Knittle.

Jason Jenkins hit Justin Secrest with a 14-yard scoring pass in the second quarter and the lead went to 15-0.

But the Pointers Willie Anderson returned the ensuing kickoff 82 yards for a touchdown and Jarod Waggoner’s conversion kick sliced the deficit to 15-7.

South Point closed the gap to 15-14 when Derek Mitchell broke free on a 34-yard touchdown run to begin the second half. Waggoner added the conversion.

Backup running back Chad Smith ran 6 yards for a touchdown as Northwest got a little distance between them and the Pointers at 22-14.

Jenkins ran 4 yards in the fourth quarter to go up 29-14, but the Pointers answered as Smith teamed up with Brian Maggard on a 31-yard scoring pass and it was 29-20.

But Smith countered with a 58-yard touchdown scamper and then on their next possession Jenkins kept the ball and ran 10 yards for a score that extended the lead to 43-20.

South Point capped the scoring as Smith ran 2 yards for a touchdown and Justin Eaches ran for the conversion.

Knittle finished with 109 yards on 16 carries and Smith had 108 yards on 21 attempts. Jenkins finished with 79 yards on 14 tries.

South Point opens Ohio Valley Conference play next Friday night at Coal Grove. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
