PEDRO — The South Point Pointers aren’t making any excuses, just plays.

Trailing by five points with three minutes to play, the Pointers were able to hit some key shots and take advantage of some poor foul shooting to rally past the Rock Hill Redmen 59-52 Friday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.

South Point is now 11-6 overall and 7-1 in the league, one game behind leader Chesapeake. The two teams meet again next Friday at South Point.

“The week off hurt some. We didn’t play well, but we did what we needed to do in order to win,” said Pointers’ coach Chris Barnes. “Right now we just want to keep winning no matter how we do it.”

Rock Hill nearly spoiled the Pointers’ title hopes as they tried to register their first league win of the season. The Redmen fell to 6-11 and 0-9.

“We gave ourselves an opportunity to win,” said Rock Hill coach Bob Wilds. “We came out with good intensity and followed the game plan. We just missed our foul shots down the stretch.”

Rock Hill led 39-38 at the end of the third quarter, but Ethan Prater scored 10 points and Blake Barnes 6 as the Pointers made their comeback.

Conversely, the Redmen were able to convert only 5-of-14 from the foul line in the fourth quarter.

Sam Cooke scored half of Rock Hill’s points in the first quarter as they took a 16-8 lead.

Prater had 6 points in the second quarter but Will McCollister scored 7 as Rock Hill took a 27-20 lead into the locker room.

Blake Barnes and Prater combined for 12 points in the third quarter as South Point cut the deficit to one point and set up the thrilling finish.

Prater led all scorers with 23 points and Barnes finished with 16.

McCollister had 14 points and eight rebounds to lead the Redmen while Cook had 12 points and seven boards.

Jeremy Blagg added six rebounds and three assists.
