CAO’s Family Fun Day in conjunction

 

Depot Square in downtown Ironton will be busy with excitement Saturday as local growers celebrate the grand opening of the farmers market.

Organizers say the event has something everyone can enjoy, from games and activities for the children, an art show and health information for adults, and of course, fresh produce and homemade goods.

The Ironton Farmers Market had its soft opening in April and since then, the group of farmers have been working to bring awareness to market.

Sam Heighton, market manager, said the farmers put together a float for the Ironton Lawrence-County Memorial Day Parade to help bring recognition to the group. The farmers handed out brochures along the parade route and the float even won the civic float award.

The aim of this weekend’s event is to bring even more people to downtown, Heighton said.

“People can get some entertainment, information on health issues, free stuff for the kids,” he said.

The market opens at 7 a.m. with various activities and events throughout the day.

Laura Brown, health commissioner with the Ironton Health Department will have coloring for the children and Diva Justice with Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital will have inflatables and health screenings from 9 a.m. to noon.

A group from Yvonne DeKay’s School of Dance will perform at 10:30 a.m. A group from Cyndi’s Dance Studio will perform at 1 p.m.

The Ironton Artist Association will have a clothesline art show beginning at about 9 a.m.

Heighton also said there are still some spaces available for farmers wishing to sell products at the market.

In partnership with the farmers market grand opening, the Ironton-Lawrence County Community Action Organization will host Family Fun Day with food, games and activities for the children.

The Family Medical Centers will have ice cream cones; the Women and Infant Children program will have games and coloring books; the Early Childhood Academy will have face painting and flower planting; One-Stop will have popcorn; Fair Housing will have temporary tattoos and bubbles; Housing will have snow cones; and Transportation; and Senior Services will have popsicles.

The CAO family events will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
