Medicare counseling set for Wednesday

IRONTON — The Ohio Senior Health Insurance Information Program of the Ohio Department of Insurance will have a free Medicare information session at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Ironton city building.

Counseling is by appointment by calling (740) 532-2172.

Participants can learn about recent changes to Medicare, find out about the Oct 15-Dec 7 Medicare Annual Coordinated Election Period, get tips on how to enroll for 2013 coverage in a Medicare prescription drug plan (Part D) and/or a Medicare health plan and see whether participants qualify to save an average of $3,900 on prescription drug costs.

Free varicose vein screening is Aug. 8

ASHLAND, Ky. — King’s Daughters Medical Center is offering a free varicose vein screening beginning at 9 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 8 at the offices of Tri-State Vascular Specialists, Suite 140, Medical Plaza B, 613 23rd St., Ashland.

Vascular/endovascular surgeon Al Addasi, M.D., will perform the screening.

Varicose veins are swollen veins that you can see through your skin. They often look blue, bulging and twisted. Left untreated, varicose veins may worsen over time and can cause aching and feelings of fatigue as well as skin changes, rashes, redness, and sores. As many as 40 million Americans have varicose veins.

Varicose veins affect men and women. Factors that can increase your risk include family history, being overweight, lack of exercise, smoking, standing or sitting for long periods of time or having deep vein thrombosis.

The screening is available to adults age 18 and older and consists of a paper and pencil questionnaire followed by a visual examination of the affected area(s).

Appointments are required for the screening and can be made by calling King’s Daughters at 1-888-377-KDMC (5362).

 

‘Groundbreaking Images’ opens Friday at museum

ASHLAND, Ky. — Work of local photographers will be on display in “Groundbreaking Images,” Boyd County Public Library’s photo exhibit, which opens Friday evening at the Highlands Museum & Discovery Center.

“Groundbreaking Images” runs until Aug. 30 and is sponsored by BCPL’s adult summer reading program, “Groundbreaking Reads,” which wraps up on Labor Day. Photographers are free to interpret the theme as they see fit.

The opening reception for the exhibit is this Friday, Aug. 2, at 7 p.m., at the museum, located at 1620 Winchester Ave. The public invited. Refreshments will be served. The reception takes place during First Friday events downtown, so admission to the museum is free.

A $50 Best of Show prize will be awarded, based on composition, print quality, uniqueness and adherence to theme.

Mosquito spraying slated for village

PROCTORVILLE — On Tuesday starting at 7 p.m. Ohio Pest Control of Portsmouth will spray for mosquitoes throughout the village of Proctorville.

Rain date will be the following week.

 

Back-to-school Ice Cream Sundae is Aug. 11 at BCPL

ASHLAND, Ky. — Boyd County Public Library is hosting its 7th annual Back-to-School Ice Cream Sundae on Sunday, Aug. 11.

Although the school year will have already begun for many children, the event is a good opportunity to get reacquainted with the library and get that important school supply — a library card.

The Ice Cream Sundae starts at 2 p.m. at the main branch 1740 Central Ave. Weather permitting, the event will be held outside.

Stepp will perform at 2:30 p.m. There will be free ice cream, as well as a chance to win a backpack full of school supplies.

It’s easy to sign up for a library card. All you need is a photo ID and proof of address is required.

A parent or guardian must sign for anyone under 18 years old.

Pedro native participates in Buckeye Girls State

ALLIANCE — Kara Addis, of Pedro, served as a delegate to Buckeye Girls State at the University of Mount Union from June 16 through June 22.

Kara served in the role of Member of the LSC during the event.

BGS is a week-long program designed to educate Ohio’s young women in the duties, privileges, rights and responsibilities of good citizenship.

By getting involved in this active hands-on process, BGS delegates learn more about city, county and state government within one week.

Nearly 900 rising high school seniors participated in this year’s event.

According to buckeyegirlsstate.org, The Girls State program was organized as a national Americanism activity by the 1937 National Convention.

The first Girls State was held in Washington D.C. in 1947.

 

Marshall’s mascot to get makeover

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (AP) — Marco the Marshall University mascot is getting another makeover, and the school is asking fans to decide on the bison’s new look.

Voting will take place on Marshall’s Facebook page through Aug. 10. Fans can choose to keep the mascot’s current design or make limited or complete changes.

Marshall chief of staff Matt Turner says Marco’s 5-year-old costume has undergone extensive wear and repairs, so it’s time to replace it.

Turner says the new costume is expected to be finished in time for Marshall’s home game on Oct. 5 against Texas-San Antonio.

 

Chesapeake UMC announces menu for free lunches

CHESAPEAKE — The Chesapeake United Methodist Church is offering one more week of free lunches.

All youth and children from age one to age 18 are welcome, along with young adults with disability up to age 21.

Serving time is from 12 to 12:30 p.m. in the church’s air conditioned fellowship hall.

The meals are provided in partnership with the Scioto County Community Action Agency and are prepared at local school cafeterias.

The menus for the week of July 29 include (in order): Bologna and cheese, chicken sandwich on a bun, hot dog on bun, chicken fajitas, and pizza. In addition each day’s meal includes a vegetable, fruit, and choice of milk. Menus are subject to change.

The church is located at the corner of Second Avenue and Fifth Street in Chesapeake.

St. Mary’s to host new program to help with grieving

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — The St. Mary’s Medical Center Department of Spiritual Care, Counseling and Mission is beginning “The Art of Grief,” a new program to help participants with the grieving process after the loss of a loved one.

The eight-week class will be every Tuesday at 6 p.m. from Aug. 6 to Oct. 1 in Room 518 in the West building of the medical center. There is a one-time registration fee of $6.

Attendees will participate in various activities each week that will aid in the grieving process, including discussions of loved ones, writing exercises, art therapy and music.
