COLUMBUS — Brent Morgan got better, and he still has a chance to get even better.

Last year, the Coal Grove Hornets’ junior golfer qualified for the Division III state tournament and shot a 165 to finish 10th among individual qualifiers and tied for 26th overall among the 72-man field.

This past weekend, Morgan enjoyed an even better performance at the Division III state golf tournament as he shot a 159 on the 7,200-yard Ohio State University Scarlet Course and placed second among individual qualifiers and 10th overall.

“Brent hit the ball great, he just couldn’t get the putts to drop when he needed them to,” said Hornets’ coach Danny Morgan.

Morgan shot identical rounds of 40 on Friday to post an overall total of 80. On the second day, Morgan carded a 40 and a 39 for a 79 total and tied with Ben Olewiler of Ashland Crestview at 159.

Jeg Coughlin of Powell Village Academy was the overall medalist with a 144. Cameron Michalak of Grove City Christian shot a 152 to place first among the individual qualifiers.

The Division II state tournament was held Friday and Saturday at NorthStar Golf Club in Sunbury.

Chesapeake senior Drew Oxley was ninth among the individual qualifiers and 33rd overall among the 72-man field. Oxley shot a 44-40=84 on the first day and followed that with a 42-42=84 to give him a 168 total.
