20 miles of roadways set to be paved

 

A short qualifying statement at the end of a bid proposal knocked out a construction company that had come in with the lowest bid to put up guardrails in the county.

PDK Construction of Pomeroy had the lowest bid for erecting two-miles of guardrails on County Road 12 and County Road 18 at $195,083.35. However the company stated on the proposal that if certain conditions occurred, the bid amount would change.

“When they put on that qualifying statement, they knocked the bid out,” County Engineer Doug Cade said. “They were the low bidder but you have to follow the rules.”

Now the contract will go to M.P. Dory Company of Columbus at a bid of $219,689.88. Awarding that contract, pending final authorization from the Ohio Department of Transportation and the Federal Highway Administration, was approved by the Lawrence County Commission at its regular Thursday meeting.

The commission also awarded a contract to the Shelly Company for 20 miles of asphalt paving on County Road 1 and County Road 4 for $2,265,199.80.

The county paid $18,000 for the engineering of the project and will have to come up with half of a 20 percent match from its Motor Vehicle Gas Tax budget. The Transportation Improvement District will provide the other 10 percent.

In other action the commissioners:

• Approved the release of $50,000 for the Chesapeake Sidewalk Replacement Project;

• Approved an environmental release request for the Chesapeake Community Center so an environmental study would not be required for $14,500 in Community Development Block Grant to go for boiler repairs at the center.
