Take a look back at the past month and you will see that many Lawrence Countians gave up their time, energy and money to make sure others had a special holiday season.

That is one of the reasons Lawrence County is a special place — the citizens’ willingness to serve their community.

Lions Club members in Ironton organized a festive Christmas parade to kickoff the season. The Coal Grove Betterment Club did the same in their village. Others across the county followed suit with tree lightings and decorations aplenty.

The City of Ironton hosted an event so children could get face time with Santa Claus.

And for those less fortunate, many school groups, volunteer organizations and businesses collected canned foods, toys and clothing items.

The Ironton City Welfare Mission gave toys to nearly 2,000 children and food baskets to nearly 700 families, while the Lawrence County Young Professionals helped 400 children with their Secret Santa Program.

There are just too many individual groups to mention, and that’s a good thing.

From mitten trees to senior trees, thousands in the community were likely able to have better Christmas than they thought possible.

As the last few pages of the calendar fall away, remember that giving doesn’t have to wait until next December. There are people in need year round.
