Gary Minard

Gary L. Minard, 35, of Ironton, passed away Monday, Jan. 20, 2014, at his residence. The Ironton native was born March 13, 1978, the son of Terry Minard of Ironton and Terrie Horn Minard, of Laveen, Ariz.

Gary attended Ironton High School and enjoyed playing the guitar, fishing and riding horses. He also enjoyed drawing, boxing, UFC and survivalist programs on television. He was of the Christian faith and was an avid supporter of our U.S. military.

He was preceded in death by paternal grandmother, Thelma Spurlock; paternal grandfather, Walter Lee Minard; and maternal grandparents, Charles and Ruby Horn.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by stepmother, Marsha Minard, of Ironton; stepmother, Tracy Pennington, of Laveen, Ariz.; a son, Gary Lee Minard Jr., of Ironton; two brothers, Reese (Jessica) Minard, of Milford, and Jerry Ryan Minard, of Phoenix, Ariz.; two nephews, Zack Minard and Bryce Minard; stepdaughter, Latisha Sturgill, of Ironton; and stepbrother, T.J. Gladeau, of Ashland, Ky.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Friday at Phillips Funeral Home with pastor Brian Chaffins officiating. Burial will follow in Woodland Cemetery and visitation will be 11 a.m. until time of service Friday at the funeral home. John Pyles

John F. Pyles, 67, passed away peacefully at his home on Jan. 21, 2014. Born on July 19, 1946, to the late Doris (Payne) Pyles and Virgil “Ike” Pyles in Ironton. He graduated from Ironton High School in 1964 and continued his education at Ohio University, graduating with a bachelor’s in business followed by a master’s degree in commercial lending from the University of Oklahoma.

He began his banking career at 2nd National Bank in Ashland, Ky., where he met his wife, Brenda Hogsten. They married on Sept. 3, 1976, at Central Christian Church in Ironton. Soon after, he began working at BancOhio, which took his family to Dayton, Lancaster and Chillicothe. In 1988 he was named president of BancOhio and the family settled in Portsmouth. In the mid ‘90s he moved on to 5/3 Bank where he became vice president of commercial lending until his retirement in 2008. He was a member of Temple Baptist Church in Portsmouth and a member of the Elks.

John enjoyed traveling, history, supporting the Ironton Fighting Tigers and spending the day at the racetrack. He is survived by his wife, Brenda Pyles, of Portsmouth; son, David Pyles, of Decatur, Ga.; daughter, Rebecca Pyles, of Chicago, Ill.; daughter, Mary Pyles, of Athens; and sister, Katy Hannan, of Ironton; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Phillips Funeral Home with pastor John Gowdy officiating. Burial will follow in Woodland Cemetery and visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Oliver Cobb

Oliver “Ollie” Cobb, 87, of Proctorville, passed away Sunday, Jan. 19, 2014, at The Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House, in Huntington, W.Va. He was born Feb. 13, 1926, in Huntington, W.Va., son of the late Rev. Roy L. and Ida Cobb. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Donna Eileen; infant son, James; his brother, Onnie Cobb; and his sister, Ruth Sager. He is survived by his daughter, Linda Gale Tackett (John); his son, Daniel Dale Cobb (Cheri); four grandchildren, Traci Hancock (Wayne), Katie Martin (Jimmy), Rusty Tackett and Allison Cobb; three great-grandchildren, Trey Hancock, Brayden Martin and Harper Hancock.

Ollie proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the Pacific theater. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Proctorville and a retired salesman from Superior Cadillac. He was a loyal member of the Proctorville Masonic Lodge 550 F&AM for 37 years, 22 years of which he was secretary. He was a 32 degree Scottish Rite Mason where he received the Emeritus Service Award and a member of Proctorville Teresa Chapter 257 O.E.S.

Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Friday at Hall Funeral Home in Proctorville by pastor Jeff Black. Burial will follow in White Chapel Memorial Gardens, in Barboursville, W.Va. Proctorville VFW Post 6878 will conduct military graveside rites. Ronald Roberts

Ronald P. Roberts, 72, of South Point, died Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2014, at King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland, Ky. Slack and Wallace Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements. Condolences may be expressed at www.slackandwallace.com.

 

 

Carol Gorby

Carol Ann Gorby, 66, of Proctorville, died Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2014, at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Huntington, W.Va. Funeral service will be 3 p.m. Friday at Hall Funeral Home in Proctorville by pastor Jason Morris. Burial will be in Rome Cemetery, in Proctorville. Donna Beard

Donna Kay Beard, 75, of Chesapeake, wife of Charles Beard, died Monday, Jan. 20, 2014. Funeral services will be 6 p.m. Friday at Beard Mortuary in Huntington, W.Va., with the Rev.
