The Ironton Fire Department was called to the scene of a two-story structure fire in the 1500 block of South 11th Street Wednesday night.

The call came in about 9:50 p.m. The residents were not home when the fire started.

IFD Inspector Mike Mahlmeister said the fire appears to have started in the back of the house, but the investigation is ongoing.

“The chief and I will go back and do a more extensive investigation this morning in the light of day,” Mahlmeister said.

Mahlmeister said one dog died in the fire and one was able to get out of the house.

He said firefighters had the blaze under control within 20 to 30 minutes but were on the scene until 12:45 a.m.

“Most of the back of the house was destroyed,” Mahlmeister said. “There was significant structural damage.”
