Thomas Matney

Thomas Ray Matney, 63, of Ironton, passed away Wednesday, March 12, 2014, at King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland, Ky. The Ironton native was born Aug. 25, 1950, the son of the late Frank and Elsie Stapleton Matney. He is survived by his wife, Ruth Pence Matney.

Mr. Matney attended Rock Hill High School and South High School in Springfield. He was a former welder for the Robbins and Meyers Company in Springfield for 10 years, retiring in 1984.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Lisa May Matney; a brother, Frankie Matney Jr.; and several aunts and uncles.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by daughter, Kathy Raeann (Danny Lewis) Matney of Ironton; son, Matt Thomas (Heidi) Matney of South Point; brother, Tim (Vicki) Matney of Ironton; two sisters, Kay Matney (Rick) Green and Janet Matney Gillespie, both of Springfield; and grandson, Austin Thomas Matney of South Point. He is also survived by his “babies,” his three dogs, Grasshopper, Sally Sue and Bear; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be Saturday from 11a.m.-1 p.m. at Phillips Funeral Home. Graveside service will follow in Mamre Cemetery with minister Chad Pemberton officiating. Danny Lewis

Danny Lee Lewis, 80, of South Point, passed away Thursday, March 13, 2014, at Cabell Huntington Hospital in Huntington, W.Va.  The Ironton native was born July 15, 1933, the son of the late Clifford Leroy and Mary Francis Pyles Lewis.

Mr. Lewis was a graduate of Ironton High School. He was a former ironworker for Dayton Malleable.  Mr. Lewis was a veteran of the Korean War where he served proudly in the U.S. Marine Corp.  He was a member of the First Baptist Church.  Mr. Lewis loved his grandchildren and was very involved with their activities.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Donald L. Lewis.

He is survived by two daughters, Mary R. Diamond and Jennifer R. Lewis of South Point; two sons, Danny (Darlene) Lewis of Milton, W.Va., and Scott A. Lewis of South Point; a sister, Rose Ann Koerper of Coal Grove;

grandchildren, Eric (Amanda) Diamond of Ironton, Seth Lewis, Trevor Lewis, Kyleah Lewis, all of Milton, W.Va., Clara Lewis and Cannon “Cannonball” Lewis of South Point.; and two great-grandchildren, Brianna and Tatum Diamond of Ironton

Funeral services will be Monday at 1 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Ironton, with pastor Eric Barnes officiating.  Burial will follow in Woodland Cemetery with military rites provided by the VFW 8850.  Visitation will be Sunday from 4-6 p.m. at Phillips Funeral Home. James Riley

James C. Riley, 96, of Ironton, died Wednesday, March 12, 2014, at Community Hospice Care Center. The Lawrence County native was born Nov. 12, 1917, to the late Everett and Mildred Clark Riley. He was the husband of Genevieve Zwilling Riley, his wife of 73 years. He had his own law practice in Ironton. He specialized in workman’s compensation. He was the owner, trainer, and driver of harness race horses. He raced horses in New York, Chicago, and Canada. He raced the horse that held the U.S. record for pacing horses for that year. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Pine Grove. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and a member of the Holy Name Society at St. Lawrence Church. He was an Army veteran. He was preceded in death by one son, Father William Riley and one daughter, Patricia Mary Johnson. He is survived by his wife, one son-in-law, Al (Butch) Johnson, of Ironton; grandchildren, Susan (John) Johnson-Brewer III of Ironton, Amy (Scott) Grow of Charleston, S.C., Steven (Kelly) Johnson of Columbus, Heather Meyers of Wheelersburg, Nicholee Lawhorn of Ironton, Thomas Johnson of Ironton, and Michael (Rachel) Johnson of Jackson; and great grandchildren, Dylan Lawhorn, Paige and Carson Johnson, Austin, Chaz, and Alex Meyers, Sabastian and Makinzie Grow and John Brewer IV. Visitation will be today from 6-8 p.m. with the Rosary at 7:45 p.m. at O’Keefe-Baker Funeral Home. Funeral will be Saturday at 3 p.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Pine Grove with Father David Huffman officiating. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to St. Mary’s Church.

Ruth Diane Boggs, 63, of Crown City, died Wednesday, March 12, 2014, at home. She is survived by her husband, Thomas Boggs.  There will be no services.

Eva Lois Callicoat, 80, of Chesapeake, died on Wednesday, March 12, 2014, at St. Mary’s Medical Center, Huntington, W.Va. She is survived by her husband, James L. Callicoat.
