FRANKLIN FURNACE — To have a chance, a batter has to put the ball in play.

John Hallum didn’t give New Boston much of a chance.

Hallum pitched a four-hitter and struck out 18 of the 21 outs as the Green Bobcats beat the Tigers 7-1 Monday in a Southern Ohio Conference game.

Hallum allowed just one walk.

“Hallum pitched an outstanding game,” said Green coach Dan McDavid. “We only had one extra base hits coming into tonight and we got four.”

Green (4-2, 3-2) snapped a scored a scoreless tie with four runs in the third inning.

Clay Applegate reached on an error, Trent Marcum doubled, Hallum walked and Caleb Johnson walked to force in a run.

Matt Howard grounded out as a run scored and Trevor Carver capped the rally with a two-run double.

Green got single runs in the next three innings.

Applegate reached on an error, stole second, moved up on a ground out and Hallum had an RBI single and it was 5-0.

In the fifth, Carver was safe on an error and Mark Allen had an RBI double.

After New Boston got a run in the top of the sixth, Green answered in the bottom of the frame when Applegate doubled, moved up on a ground out and scored on a passed ball.
