Virgie Cox-Adkins

Virgie Cox-Adkins, 77, of South Point, passed away Monday, May 5, 2014, at King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland, Ky. The Little Hearts, W.Va., native was born May 22, 1936, a daughter of the late Thomas and Dicie Workman Wiley.

Virgie attended Guyan Valley Schools and she was a former housekeeper for Pulleys Nursing Home in South Point. She was a member of the Isaac Walton Lake, she loved fishing, loved being outdoors and digging root. She was of the Freewill Baptist faith.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by six sisters, Marie Woody, Pearl Wiley, Laney Wiley, Delania Wiley, Florene Wiley and Rosamae Wiley; and a brother, George Wiley.

She is survived by her husband, Mitchell “Mick” Adkins; son, Raymond Cox (Lisa), of South Point; daughters, Jennifer Moore (John), of Columbus, and Pamela Brandon (Larry), of Kenova, W.Va.; sons, Patrick Cox, of South Point, and Mitchell Adkins Jr. Debbie), of South Point; daughter, Lori Adkins, of Toledo; son, Bobby Hutchins (Stephanie), of Warren; sisters, Eileen Ellis, of Mill Creek, W.Va., Della Green, of Mill Creek, W.Va., Eva Roberts, of Rossmore, W.Va., and Carol Dingess, of Chapmanville, W.Va.; brothers, Dick Wiley, of Big Creek, W.Va., and Dan Wiley, of Chauncy, W.Va.; 17 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Friday at Tracy Brammer-Monroe Funeral Home in Ironton with the Rev. Mark Adkins officiating. Burial will follow in Highland Cemetery. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Mary Akers

Mary Ellen Akers, 83, of Ironton, died Saturday, May 3, 2014, at Ohio Valley Sanctuary in Ironton. She was born on Feb. 25, 1931, in Beatrice, Neb., to the late Theodore Kipf and Hazel Redabush Kipf. She was a former employee for Dayton Malleable.

She is survived by three sons, Michael (Diana) Akers, Scott Akers and Keith (Pam) Akers; one daughter, Georgiana (Bill) Loomis; one sister, Joana Cripe; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Besides her parents, she was also preceded in death by three brothers, Dean Kipf, Bobby Kipf and Stan Wocke.

Funeral services will be at the convenience of the family under the direction of Harrison-Pyles Funeral Home in Wheelersburg.

 

Barbara Williams

Barbara J. Williams, 77, of Portsmouth, passed away Monday, May 5, 2014, at the Hempstead Manor in Portsmouth. The Ironton native was born Jan. 30, 1937, a daughter of the late Edward and Elizabeth Handshoe Hannahs. She is survived by her husband, James Williams, whom she married May 13, 1972.

Mrs. Williams attended Ironton High School, was a homemaker, a member of the VFW, American Legion, the Eagles and the Moose.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sons, Nick Ferguson and James Collins; and grandson, Aaron Collins.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, Jeffry Ferguson, of Ironton, and David Collins, of Ashland, Ky.; three stepchildren, Charlene Jacobs, of Winchester, Ky., Carla Fultz, of Olive Hill, Ky., and Tony Williams, of Olive Hill, Ky.; three grandchildren, James Collins, Kara Ferguson and Christopher J. Collins, all of Ashland, Ky.; and five great-grandchildren.

Virgil Sexton

Virgil Sexton Jr., 88, of South Point, died Tuesday, May 6, 2014, at Madison Park in Huntington, W.Va. He was survived by his wife, Allene Brooks Sexton. Arrangements are pending at Hall Funeral Home.

 

 

Viola Starr

Viola Mae Stevens-Starr, 85, of Russell, Ky., died Monday, May 5, 2014, at Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital. Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Carman Funeral Home with pastor Ken Gowin officiating. Burial will follow at Bellefonte Memorial Gardens in Flatwoods, Ky.
