There is an adage that our elected officials in Columbus think the Ohio border stops when you get to Portsmouth.

For the last 28 years, however, Lawrence Countians have made sure those in the state capital do not forget about the county and its residents.

This past Tuesday, the Greater Lawrence County Area Chamber of Commerce hosted its annual Legislative Day, which allows the leaders of our communities, elected officials and several students from various Lawrence County schools to sit down and speak face to face with our state senators and representatives.

In addition to speaking with those officials, attendees are able to meet with several state organizations that can have a direct impact on the county. Those included a focus on workforce development, economic development and the department of transportation along with others.

Some may ask about the point of this event. There is a significant need for us to ensure that our state leaders and state agencies are aware of our county’s needs and concerns.

This also provides the opportunity for those in Columbus to make the connection with their constituents.

The entire staff of the chamber deserves credit for continuing the efforts of former Executive Director Pat Clonch, who started the event.

This is an important tradition for all residents of Lawrence County because without this annual trip, the adage could have been a stark reality.
