Alternating every two years, Olympians put forth their best effort to win the gold. However, each year the Lawrence County Special Olympics measures success not by gold, silver or bronze, but rather by smiles and memories made.

That was the case this past Tuesday when the annual event that continues to be an important occasion for many youth throughout the county was held at Chesapeake High School.

We commend all those who helped organize games and each continue to make this wonderful event something exceptional each year.

This event is important because it provides an outlet for those participating the opportunity to get their competitive juices flowing, but above all, to have a good time.

This, much like the multitude of great programs and events throughout our region, is a significant bright spot.

Although it only comes once a year, it takes a major commitment behind the scenes to ensure everything goes according to plan.

Because of the dedication and effort of all those involved with the youth of Lawrence County who have special needs, it is essential to make sure we show our gratitude.

While it may not always get the fanfare of the Winter or Summer Olympics, the ability to compete and see the thrill of victory and pride to those competing for their respective school is something that cannot be understated.
