WILLOW WOOD — The shots went up and the shots came down. They just didn’t come down in the right place.

The Symmes Valley Lady Vikings struggled from the field as they lost to the Portsmouth West Lady Senators 60-46 Monday.

The Lady Vikings only connected on 16-of-71 shots for 22 percent.

“The shots were good looks, but they would not roll in for us tonight,” said Lady Vikings’ coach Lisa Bryant.

“However, our kids never stopped and kept clawing and fighting their way back tonight, but we could not get their shots to fall on the offensive end.”

The poor shooting started right away in the first quarter as Symmes Valley made only two fields goals as they dug themselves a huge 23-6 hole.

Symmes Valley mounted a comeback in the second quarter as Brooke Skinner scored 6 points and Nikki Nance nailed a 3-pointer to get the Lady Vikings within 32-19 at the half.

“I told our kids that if we set up our offense and were patient, we could cut their lead by 10 at the half. We almost did,” said Bryant.

The Lady Vikings continued to battle in the second half as they pulled down 14 offensive rebounds. Still, they couldn’t convert their second and third shots and only managed to cut the deficit to 43-32 after three quarters.

Jessie Morris and Skinner combined for 9 of the Lady Vikings’ 13 points in the quarter.

Although the Lady Vikings cut into the lead again, West converted 9-of-10 from the foul line to prevent the comeback.

“I cannot fault my kids’ effort tonight. They never gave up and left it all out on the floor,” said Bryant.

Skinner had 14 points and Morris 12 to lead the Lady Vikings (6-9). Skinner also pulled down 12 rebounds while Chelsea Wall and Morris grabbed 7 each. Morris added 4 steals.

Christin Graf scored 18 and Cheyanne White 10 to lead West.
