Training crucial for child safety

Everyday when parents send their children off to school on a bus they trust the driver will deliver those children to school safely and return them home in the same manner.

And thankfully, that is usually the case.

But that hasn’t stopped the county’s law enforcement agencies and bus drivers from running through hypothetical training scenarios in the event an armed shooter would threaten the lives of those on board.

Before school started this week all Lawrence County bus drivers completed active shooter and hostage training in conjunction with the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office and Ironton Police Department.

Although scenarios such as these are not pleasant to think about it has become increasingly more important to ensure everyone from law enforcement to school personnel are prepared to handle any situation that arises while children are in their care.

We commend the sheriff’s office and IPD for taking the lead on these training exercises.

When it comes to the safety of children there is no such thing as too much preparation.
