McDERMOTT — The St. Joseph Female Flyers might have the Midas touch.

After not playing a soccer for a week, the Female Flyers had no problem as they turned in a golden performance with a 7-0 shutout of the Northwest Lady Mohawks on Wednesday.

“After a week without touching the ball, I wasn’t sure how we would look going into (Wednesday’s) match,” said St. Joseph coach Kyle Weatherholt.

“We had two practices rained out and missed some valuable practice time heading into the tournament next week. Despite not touching the ball for a week, the girls did pretty well and got off to a good start.”

Sidney Payne and Lynsey Booker led the Female Flyers to the win. Payne had two goals and two assists while Booker punched in three goals.

Ophelia Weatherholt had three assists, Kaylee Sheridan had a goal and an assist while Natalie Heaberlin added a goal.

Payne’s unassisted goal four minutes into the game gave St. Joseph a 1-0 lead and Heaberlin scored a nice headed goal from a corner kick four minutes later.

Booker took over using her speed and strength to get three goals over a 10-minute span and it was 5-0.

Sheridan scored in the 25th minute on a corner kick and it was 6-0 at the break.

Payne finished off the scoring just one minute into the second half with a well-placed header off a corner that Sheridan deflected for the assist.

“Sidney Payne was really active and found her way through the defense for the opening goal. Lynsey was just being Lynsey,” coach Weatherholt.

“It was nice to see our girls attacking the ball and getting on the end of corner kicks tonight.”

The game was called after 60 minutes due to darkness.

St. Joseph plays its final home game at 2 p.m. Saturday against North Adams.
