COLUMBUS (AP) — Brett Kean threw for two second-half touchdowns to lead Lakewood St. Edward to a 31-21 win against Huber Heights Wayne in the Division I state championship game in Ohio Stadium.

St. Edward (13-2) won its previous title in 2010, also beating Wayne.

Kean’s second TD went to Michael O’Malley from 5 yards with 5:44 left in the game for the final margin and capped a nine-play, 46-yard drive after Wayne (13-2) pulled to within 24-21 when Robert Landers scored from 13 yards after recovering a St. Edward’s fumble.

Before that, St. Edward increased a three-point halftime advantage to 24-14 just 50 seconds into the fourth when Kean completed a 6-yard scoring pass to Frank Gelb on the fourth down.

DIVISION VII

Marion Local 41

Norwalk St. Paul 0

COLUMBUS (AP) — Jacy Goettemoeller ran for 106 yards and two long scores on his first five carries to lead fast-starting No. 1 Maria Stein Marion Local to a 41-0 victory Saturday over Norwalk St. Paul in the Division VII state title game. It’s the Flyers’ fourth consecutive small-school crown and their 37th win in a row.

The Flyers (15-0) became only the third Ohio high school team to win four straight championships, joining Cleveland St. Ignatius (1991-95) and Newark Catholic (1984-87).

They led 28-0 early in the second quarter. The game was played with a running clock in the second half at rainy Ohio Stadium before a crowd of 7,192.

St. Paul (13-2), which won a 2009 championship and was making its fifth trip to the finals, was limited to 98 yards.

DIVISION IV

Benedictine 21

Kettering Alter 14

COLUMBUS (AP) — First-team Associated Press All-Ohioan Jerome Baker scored two touchdowns and Justin Layne returned an interception for a score to lead Cleveland Benedictine to a 21-14 victory over top-ranked Kettering Alter in the Division IV state title game on Friday at Ohio Stadium.

It was the seventh state crown for the Bengals (13-2), ranked No. 4 in the final regular-season AP poll.

Alex Pack and all-state QB Dusty Hayes ran for touchdowns for Alter (14-1), making its fourth trip to the finals.

The Knights got the ball back after a late fumble but a last-minute drive came up empty when Hayes was stopped a yard short on a fourth-down run under pressure in Benedictine territory.

DIVISION VI

Minster 46,

Kirtland 42

COLUMBUS (AP) — Josh Nixon’s third touchdown pass to Eli Wolf with 1:22 left capped a 13-0 blitz at the finish to help Minster stun defending champion and top-ranked Kirtland 46-42 Friday in the Division VI state title game.

Kirtland (14-1), in the finals for the fourth year in a row and seeking its third title in that span, led 42-33 with 4:18 left.

But Minster (11-4) pulled to 42-40 on Evan Huelsman’s 2-yard TD with 1:56 left and Jason Schultz’s PAT.

Schultz then recovered his own onside kick. Two plays later, Nixon’s short pass to Wolf ended up a 51-yard game-winning touchdown when one defender missed a tackle and two others collided.

Cin. La Salle 55

Nordonia 20

COLUMBUS(AP) — First-team Associated Press All-Ohioan Jeremy Larkin rushed for 104 yards and two early touchdowns and Cincinnati La Salle’s defense provided two scores in a 55-20 victory over Macedonia Nordonia on Friday night in a rainy Division II state championship game.

Larkin, a finalist for the AP Mr. Football award, staked La Salle (14-1) to an early 14-3 lead and the Lancers never looked back. Nick Watson and Jarell White ran for touchdowns, while Avery Larkin returned an interception 44 yards for a score and John Junker blocked a punt and returned it 15 yards for a TD.

La Salle was making its first trip to the state finals.

All-stater David Murray threw two touchdown passes for Nordonia (14-1), now 0-2 in state title games.
