Chryst returns to coach Wisconsin

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Paul Chryst is coming home to coach Wisconsin.

The school made it official on Wednesday, hiring Chryst away from Pittsburgh. The announcement ended days of speculation following the surprising departure of Gary Andersen for Oregon State.

Chryst is a former Wisconsin offensive coordinator and a Madison native. He leaves the Panthers after going 19-19 in three seasons, returning to his hometown and alma mater.

The 49-year-old Chryst had two prior stints as an assistant for the Badgers. Most notably, he was part of the Wisconsin staff from 2005-11, helping the Badgers to five double-digit victory seasons and two Rose Bowls.

Marshall coach Doc Holliday has reportedly contacted Pittsburgh about its coaching vacancy.

 

Dayton dismisses 2 over conduct rule

DAYTON (AP) — Dayton dismissed junior Devon Scott — the Flyers’ top rebounder — and junior reserve Jalen Robinson from the team on Wednesday for breaking a rule about player conduct.

Director of Athletics Tim Wabler said the players’ behavior was “unacceptable” without going into detail about the rule involved.

The 6-foot-9 Scott started nine games and averaged 9.1 points and a team-leading 7.4 rebounds. Robinson, who also is 6-foot-9, averaged 3.2 points and 2.4 rebounds in nine games.

The Flyers (7-2) host Boston on Saturday.

 

Indians’ 2B Kipnis has finger surgery

CLEVELAND (AP) — Indians second baseman Jason Kipnis had surgery to repair a damaged tendon in his left ring finger.

The team said Kipnis had the operation on Tuesday at the Cleveland Clinic. Kipnis injured his finger while working out at home in Chicago. Kipnis was examined over the weekend by team medical personnel and his operation was performed by Dr. Thomas Graham.

The Indians say they expect Kipnis, who batted just .240 this season, to be ready for the start of the 2015 season. The club did not indicate how Kipnis might be limited during spring training.

The 27-year-old Kipnis was an All-Star in 2013, batting .284 with 17 homers and 84 RBIs in 149 games. He hit just six homers and drove in only 41 runs this past season. He signed a $52.5 million, six-year contract in April.

 

Busch testifies he to woman to leave

DOVER, Del. (AP) — Kurt Busch testified Wednesday that he repeatedly told his ex-girlfriend to leave his motorhome the night she claims the NASCAR driver assaulted her.

Busch’s ex-girlfriend is seeking a court order directing him to stay away from her. He testified during a hearing over that request that Patricia Driscoll came to his motorhome uninvited and unannounced and demanded that he tell her son that their relationship was over.

Busch said while the two were in his bedroom, he again asked her to leave, for what he said was the 5th time.

“I took my hands and cupped her cheeks and I looked at her eye to eye and I said ‘you need to leave.’ I was defusing the situation,” he said.

Busch also said Driscoll’s testimony a day earlier included fabrications.

Busch also acknowledged sending a text to Driscoll hoping to talk to her almost a month after telling her their relationship was over.

Driscoll’s attorney called Busch to testify just before a lunch break in Wednesday’s hearing.

Driscoll, 36, testified Tuesday that Busch choked her and smashed her head into a wall inside his motorhome at Dover International Speedway in September, and that she still fears for her safety.

“I don’t know what he’s capable of doing,” she said.

Busch’s attorneys have denied the allegations, which are the subject of a separate criminal investigation by Dover police. They say a no-contact order is not needed.

Driscoll testified that she became concerned about Busch after the couple fought following a race in New Hampshire, one week before the Dover incident. She said Busch was drinking and struggling with depression. Driscoll said he also became violent after the New Hampshire race.

Defense attorneys said Busch told her then that their relationship was over, but that she refused to accept the couple had permanently split.
