The next act slated to perform for the Ohio University Southern Community Concert Series is Duo Alves, a guitar-violin duo performing European classical music.

The concert will be at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 26, in the Collins Center Bowman Auditorium. The performance is free and features guitarist Dr. Júlio Ribeiro Alves and violinist Kristen Alves. Both reside in Huntington.

Júlio Alves has been a faculty member in the Marshall University School of Music and Theatre since 2006 where he oversees the guitar studio. He teaches applied classical guitar lessons, guitar literature, guitar pedagogy, guitar skills and guitar techniques. He also teaches music theory, aural skills and directs the guitar ensemble.

Dr. Alves earned a doctor of music degree in guitar performance and music literature from Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music, a master of music degree in guitar performance from the Peabody Conservatory at Johns Hopkins University, and a bachelor of music degree in guitar performance from the University of Brasília in his native country, Brazil. He performs a wide variety of repertoire from various ethnicities and historical periods and has performed in Brazil, the United States, Argentina, Uruguay, and Costa Rica. Alves maintains an active performance schedule both as a soloist and as a member of several chamber ensembles. These include: the Violauta Duo with flutist Wendell Dobbs; Duo Alves with Kristen Alves; and, the Violautalino Trio with violinist Kristen Alves and Dobbs.

Kristen Alves holds degrees from the Peabody Conservatory of Music and from the Rice University Shepherd School of Music. She is the principal second violinist of the Huntington Symphony Orchestra and is also a member of the Ohio Valley Symphony Orchestra. A Huntington resident since 2006, she taught violin at Marshall University and at the University of Brasília in Brazil. While in Brazil, she also placed first in the National Audition of the Orchestra of the National Theatre Claudio Santoro.  Currently, she maintains a private studio at home performs in Duo Alves, and with the Violautalino Trio, which includes Ribeiro Alves and Dobbs.
