The snows may have postponed one of the first events of this year’s Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, but not the enthusiasm for what’s coming up the rest of March.

This past Saturday was slated as the fourth annual 5K run, always held at The Point industrial park. With the massive snowstorm on Thursday, the run will now be on Saturday, March 21, at The Point.

Next up is this Saturday’s popular chili fest and craft show, at Dawson-Bryant High School.

“We’re looking to continue our success that we’ve had in the past with our chili fest,” said Paul Mollett, board of DD superintendent.

March is celebrated as DD Awareness Month to help the community realize the importance of the developmentally disabled as part of the community, according to a release from the board. The statewide theme for this year’s activities encourages everyone to focus on the talents and abilities of people and how they make a difference in the community.

“We’re happy that we’ve made Chili Fest a staple in Lawrence County and have gotten local organizations to participate,” said Tim Nunnery, public relations and personnel director.

After the Chili Fest will be the March Madness basketball game featuring the media versus players from the Open Door School and Tri-State Industries. Before that game will be the third annual Tribune versus Officeholders game at 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 24 at Dawson-Bryant High School gym.

Also through March and April, the board of DD will have a food drive and eyeglass collections throughout the county.
