Voters want, need online registration

As we move forward in today’s society, one of the things in the state of Ohio that still run on an antiquated set of standards is voter registration. Legislation introduced last month in both the Ohio House and Senate would afford residents to register to vote online.

This legislation makes sense and brings logic to the forefront, as this law is something that would provide for something that is already being done in many other states.

Ohioans can already perform many things online, such as vehicle registration and make changes to basic voter information.

While this is a reasonable proposal, it is paramount that the proper precautions are in place from the start because of the potential for fraudulent activities and other negative aspects.

Nevertheless, while potential issues may exist, those complications with online voter registration are no more prevalent than the registration process presently used which will still be available to those who lack access.

It seems as though many of those protections are in place like validating information through other state agencies while maintaining necessary elements of the National Voter Registration Act of 1993.

Working on common sense legislation like this is something that will allow the state to move forward.
