James Miller

James (Jimmy) Miller, 92, one of Ironton’s few remaining World War II veterans, died Saturday, May 30, 2015, at the Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland, Kentucky, after suffering a stroke at home.

During WWII, he piloted B-17 Flying Fortresses, and later was assigned stateside to instruct others to fly the iconic planes. He was sent to Miami, Florida, for training at the start of his service, along with thousands of other service men and women. A proud veteran who participated in Memorial Day parades and other veterans activities until recent years, he was born April 27, 1923, in Ironton, to parents Gladys (Colfer) and Harold Miller.

He survived by his daughter, Debra Miller, and husband Steven, of Balto, Maryland; and son, James Dwight (J.D.) Miller, and his wife, Gle; and daughter, Shana of League City, Texas; a sister, Rebecca (Becky) Sheets, of Encinitas, California; and Steven and Leslie Sheets, of California; and nephew Greg Justice, of Florida, formerly of Ironton, and departed wife Sherry Waldo-Justice; nieces Sherry (Johnson) Martin, and husband Ron, Lisa (Johnson) Myers and husband “Butch” Arthur, both of Ironton, Connie (Justice) Crowther of Coral Gables, Florida, and husband, Tim.

He was predeceased by his parents; two sisters, Joyce M. Justice and Mary Ann Johnson, both of Ironton; and former wives, Wilma Gilton-Miller, mother of Debra and J.D., and Genevieve Dillard-Miller.

Before going to war, he was a popular bachelor around town, a prankster who drove his tiny Crosley car down the brick-paved streets of Ironton High School. His first job was driving a Heiner’s Bread truck, delivering fresh bread to grocery stores all around the region. He also worked at Airistech Chemicals. He was a member of Central Christian Church in Ironton, loved the Reds, Bengals, Ohio State, Marshall and camping at Lake Vesuvius. An avid lover of the water, the Ohio River was epic in his early adventures on the water. He taught everyone how to ski (if brave enough) and be fearless in the water, but more importantly, he was patriotic and a humble American, loving God, family and country. He fought the good fight in living and dying. It was a good fight dad and my job here is done. Rest now in peace, my hero and friend. You deserve it.

Edward Davisson

Edward Scott Davisson, 48, of Franklin Furnace, passed away May 29, 2015, at the Southern Ohio Medical Center in Portsmouth. The Portsmouth native was born Aug. 16, 1966, the son of the late Nelson Eddie and Barbara Ann Holbrook Davisson.

Scott was a 1985 graduate of Green High School and a former employee for the Dayton Malleable Iron Company. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

He is survived by a son, Michael S. Davisson, of South Point; a sister and brother-in-law, Sandy and Tim Salyers, of Franklin Furnace; and a granddaughter, Mikha J. Davisson, of South Point.

Phyllis Moore

Phyllis Louise Moore, 89, of Proctorville, died Monday, June 1, 2015, at home. Funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m. at Hall Funeral Home and Crematory, Proctorville, by pastor Berkley Saunders.
