Gladys Giles

March 23, 1929 — Oct. 10, 2015

Gladys Venus Giles, 86, of Ironton, passed away Saturday, Oct. 10, 2015, at the Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland, Kentucky. The Floyd County, Kentucky native was born March 23, 1929, a daughter of the late Elisha and Nora Adams Sparks. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Fred Giles, whom she married March 27, 1948, and he passed away Dec. 16, 1997.

Mrs. Giles attended Decatur School and was a homemaker. She loved the Lord and was a member of the Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church, where she loved to sing. She also loved to cook and watch game shows.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by four brothers, Woodrow Sparks, Warnie Sparks, James Sparks and Johnny Sparks; and three sisters, Mary Murr, Alkie Corbin, and Haley Sizemore.

She is survived by two sons, James Roy (Donna) Giles, of Marion and Darrell Freddie (Dorothy) Giles, of Ashland, Kentucky; a sister, Roxie Lee Stiltner, of Sciotoville; seven grandchildren, Darren Giles, Ritchie Giles, Derrick Giles, Melissa Giles, Vanessa Giles, Hannah Giles and Hayley Giles; 10 great-grandchildren; and many special nieces, nephews and a very close and special friend, Gail Delawder, of Ironton.

Graveside services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday in Macedonia Cemetery with the Rev. Homer Campbell officiating. Visitation will be Tuesday from 6-9 p.m. at the Tracy Brammer-Monroe Funeral Home, Ironton. To offer condolences to the family, please visit www.phillipsfuneralhome.net.

 

 

Anne Riley

Feb. 26, 1941 — Feb. 4, 2015

Anne E. Riley, age 73, of Jackson, Michigan, formerly of Brooklyn, Michigan, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2015, at Allegiance Health in Jackson, Michigan, surrounded by her loving family.

She was born Feb. 26 1941, in Ironton, to Asa M. and Catherine S. (Hurst) Johnson.

Anne was raised in Ironton before moving to the Saline, Michigan area in the 1960s. She then moved to Brooklyn, Michigan and then to Jackson, Michigan five years ago.

Anne graduated from Rock Hill High School in Kitts Hill in 1958.

She enjoyed sewing and loved her grandchildren.

Anne is survived by one daughter, Stephanie (Jeff) Eaker, of Jackson, Michigan; to grandchildren, Riley and Olivia Eaker, of Jackson, Michigan; one sister, Sandra (Jack) Wheaton, of Jackson, Michigan; two brothers, Paul Johnson, of Columbus and Alfred “Butch” Johnson, of Haverhill; nieces and nephews that include, Amy (Chris) Albrecht, of Three Rivers, Michigan and Brian (Deborah) Wheaton, of Michigan Center, Michigan. She was preceded in death by her parents; one infant son, David Riley, Jr.; and one sister, Mary Bryant, who passed away on Aug. 7, 2015.

Cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at St. Lawrence O’Toole Church, Ironton, with Fr. David Huffman officiating. Burial of her ashes will take place in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Pine Grove. Arrangements are entrusted to the Brown-Van Hemert Funeral Home in Addison, Michigan.

 

Olive Geswein

Sept. 16, 1922 — Oct. 10, 2015

Olive Jane Geswein, 93, formerly of Ironton, died on Saturday Oct. 10, 2015, in Delaware, Ohio. She was the widow of the late Dr. Gerald Carl Geswein. She was born Sept. 16, 1922, to the late Albert and Sylvia Herr.

She worked alongside her husband, Dr. Geswein, at his practice in Ironton before becoming a homemaker for her three children. She was a member of St. Lawrence O’Toole Church in Ironton and St. Joan of Arc in Powell. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She enjoyed to travel, especially to the beach and was an avid fan of the Ohio State Buckeyes and Cincinnati Reds.

She is survived by two sons, Daniel (Janet) Geswein, of Dublin and Gary (Cathy) Geswein, of Johnson City, Tennessee; one daughter, Janice (Michael Everheart) O’Herron, of Delaware, Ohio; grandchildren, Jerry (Mimi) Geswein, of Powell, Valerie (Don) Cowette, of Palm City, Florida, Michael Geswein, of Cincinnati, Andrea (Alex) Condos, of Powell, Kris (Maria) Geswein, of Knoxville, Tennessee, Jeff Geswein, of Johnson City, Tennessee, Bill Geswein, of Knoxville, Tennessee, Craig (Pam) O’Herron, of Columbus and Casey O’Herron, of Columbus; great-grandchildren, Jack Geswein, Layne Geswein, Kate Geswein, Sam Cowette, Evan Cowette, Coen Geswein and McClain Geswein; sisters, Alice (Mike) Natalizio, of Palos Verdes, California, Barbara (Keith) Shumate, of Tampa, Florida, Jeannette (Jim) Ferguson, of Marion and Sandra (Ray) White, of Oxford.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m.Wednesday at O’Keefe-Baker Funeral Home. Funeral will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at St. Lawrence O’Toole Church with Father David Huffman officiating.
