Pointers close season with win

PROCTORVILLE — After a slow start this season, the South Point Pointers finished their season strong.

The Pointers slipped past the Fairland Dragons 3-2 on Thursday to end the soccer regular season with an 8-6-2 record after an 0-1-1 start.

Drew Smith got the only goal of the first half with an assist from Jake Helton as the Pointers took a 1-0 lead at the 24:00 mark.

Fairland tied the game at the 45:00-minute mark of the second half on an unassisted goal by Tyler Webb.

South Point then took the lead for good with 59:00 on the clock as Jordan Overstreet scored on a free kick.

Helton followed that at the 74:00-mark with a corner kick and it was 3-1.

Fairland got its final goal two minutes later, but the Pointers were able to hang on for the win.

Eli Lucas had four saves for South Point while Fairland goalie Alex Ward had six saves.

On Saturday, Oct. 24, in the Division II sectional tournament, South Point visits Gallipolis at 6 p.m. and Fairland goes to Marietta at 4 p.m.
