Huntington, W.Va. — From its inception, One By One Animal Advocates has been about giving. Week after week, countless volunteers give of their time and money to ensure homeless dogs and cats receive the vetting they need and ultimately find homes. This holiday season, the group is taking on a new initiative they’re calling “Helping Hands & Paws” to aid not only animals, but people in need too.

Volunteer Heather Aulick says while animal is in the organization’s name, much of the reason behind what they do is inspired by the happiness that animals bring to their owners.

“It is rewarding to see a dog go from the cold, concrete shelter floor to the warmth of their new family’s bed,” said Aulick. “But we also do it for the joy that’s visibly seen on the faces of the adopters. There’s a warmth that pets bring – companionship and understanding that far surpass other earthly comforts.”

Now through Nov. 13, One By One is collecting basic human and pet necessities to distribute to two groups in the community — the homeless and low income senior citizens.

“Often times, those who are on a fixed income or homeless struggle to provide food for their pets, so they share a portion of their meal with them, reducing their nutritional intake and potentially harming their pets,” said Aulick. “And, in cold weather, many of these same people do not have the means to keep themselves warm, let alone their pets.”

The organization’s goal is to collect dog and cat food, treats, and dog sweaters, as well as warm accessories for their owners (hats, socks, gloves and blankets). One By One is teaming up with Meals on Wheels to distribute the items and will also choose a Saturday around Thanksgiving to distribute items to the homeless.

To make a donation, items can be dropped off in collection bins set up at Animal Care Clinic, Cabell County Community Services Organization, Inc., Proctorville Animal Clinic, Club Pet, Town House Kennels and Wigglebutt Farms. Cash donations are being accepted via PayPal using onebyoneaa@gmail.com or by mailing a check to One by One Animal Advocates | PO Box 1032 | Ashland, KY41105-1032.

One By One Animal Advocates is a volunteer-based organization that began in 2012 with the purpose of helping dogs and cats in need in the Huntington area find homes or rescues, as well as to reduce the rate of euthanasia in local animal shelters. One By One also promotes overall pet wellness, particularly spay and neuter.
