OK, who put the lid on the basket?

The St. Joseph Female Flyers were able to get off the shots but they wouldn’t fall in a 44-33 season-opening loss to the Portsmouth Notre Dame Lady Titans on Friday.

St. Joseph was able to connect on just 10-of-54 shots and had only three field goals in the first half.

“We had some makeable shots and just missed them. We have kids playing varsity for the first time and trying to figure things out,” said St. Joseph coach Nick Miller.

“We were a little impatient and a little nervous being the first time out. We settled down and did a little better in the second half.”

The Female Flyers fell behind 34-19 at the end of the third quarter but rallied to within six points with two minutes to play.

However, they were forced to foul and the Lady Titans converted the free throws to secure the win.

“We played pretty good defense and we didn’t give up. We kept playing hard,” said coach Miller.

Hagen Schaefer had 5 points in the first quarter as Notre Dame went up 11-3. Lynsey Booker scored 4 points in the second quarter for St. Joseph but they trailed 19-10 at the break.

St. Joseph was 3-of-31 from the field in the first half.

Schafer and Ragen Kayser got 6 points each in the third to lead by 15. Alyson Johnson scored all 4 of her points in the quarter for St. Joseph.

In the fourth quarter, Morgan Turner scored 6 and Booker 4 more as the Female Flyers cut the deficit to six before being forced to foul.

Turner had 12 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals in her first varsity game. Booker got 10 points, 7 rebounds and 5 steals. Ashley Bartram grabbed 6 rebounds.

Schaefer scored a game-high 17 points for the Lady Titans.

St. Joseph hosts South Gallia at 6 p.m. on Monday.
