NEWARK — The Chesapeake Panthers went to play against the “Big Boys” and played with the “Big Boys.”

Chesapeake — the only Division III team in the Newark Holiday Tournament — lost in overtime on Saturday and won on Sunday in an event that featured three Division I schools.

“We didn’t play too bad. We had our chances to win on Saturday,” said Chesapeake coach Ryan Davis.

Julian Malone grabbed an offensive rebound and scored at the buzzer to lift the Westerville North Warriors over the Panthers 75-73 in overtime on Saturday.

The Panthers were just 13-of-21 from the foul line.

The loss spoiled an outstanding performance by the Panthers’ 6-foot-6 senior center Brad Meadows who had a career-high 36 points and hauled down 22 rebounds.

Gage Rhoades scored 23 points in the Panthers’ first loss after six straight wins to open the season.

Rhoades had made a 3-point goal with 15 seconds left in overtime to tie the game before Moore’s winning basket.

The Panthers bounced back against Toledo Woodward on Sunday in the consolation game as they beat the Polar Bears 61-52.

Meadows again led the Panthers with 26 points while Rhoades added 10. Jake Stevens — coming off a high-ankle sprain — had 9 points.

The Panthers led 15-9 after the first quarter and 30-16 at the half. The lead was 46-33 after three quarters.

Westerville beat Newark 74-73 in double overtime in Sunday’s championship game.

The Panthers visit Portsmouth on Tuesday, Dec. 5, in an Ohio Valley Conference game.
