James Eckles, Jr.

May 31, 1925 — Feb. 4, 2016

James E. Eckles, Jr., 90, of Ironton, passed away Thursday, Feb. 4, 2016, at the Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland, Kentucky. The Beaver, Pennsylvania, native was born May 31, 1925, a son of the late James. E. Sr. and Madeline Brown Eckles.

Mr. Eckles was a retiree of Keystone Bakery in Bridgewater, Pennsylvania and a member of the 13th Street Baptist Church in Ashland, Kentucky. He was also a minister for 25 years in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania at the Morado Faith Tabernacle.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife of 35 years, Elizabeth “Libby” Scripture Eckles; his second wife of 32 years, Juanita Kuehne Eckles, whom he married Nov. 13, 1982; two sisters, Marsha Hartling and Joy Dawson; and four half sisters.

He is survived by two daughters, Esther (Dale) Barrett, of Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, and Rebecca (Lowell) Wilks, of Scott Depot, West Virginia; six grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Phillips Funeral Home, Ironton, with pastor Jim Byrd officiating. Burial will follow in Woodland Cemetery and visitation will be Tuesday from noon until the time of the service at the funeral home. Edward Johnson

Oct. 9, 1923 — Feb. 4, 2016

Edward Lee Johnson, 92, of Greenup, Kentucky, passed away Thursday, Feb. 4, 2016, at King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland, Kentucky. The Haverhill native was born Oct. 9, 1923, the son of the late William Huff Johnson and Pearl Ellen Oliver Johnson.

Mr. Johnson attended Green Township Ohio Schools and was a World War II Army Veteran serving in the 32nd Signal Corp. He was a former employee at Montgomery Ward in Portsmouth and retired from Wellcraft Boat Company in Bradenton, Florida. He formerly attended the United Methodist Church in Virginia and the Greenup First United Methodist Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brother, Marvin Johnson; sister, Marie Gool; his companion, Dorine Wilson; and son-in-law, Kenneth H. Douglas

He is survived by his former wife and mother of his children, Margaret Ellen Spears Memmer, of Columbus; son, Steven Edward (Dana) Johnson, of Columbus; daughter, Linda Lee Johnson Douglas, of Greenup, Kentucky; two grandchildren, Shannon Michelle (Justin) Routte and Brian Steven Johnson, both of Columbus; two great-grandchildren, Emma and Olivia Routte; sister, Janet Eaches, of Ironton, and her children, Don, Mike, Jeff and Chris; sister, Clara Marie (Jack) Freson, of Cincinnati, and her daughter, Lindsey; sister, Billie Jo Johnson, of Dayton, and her son Shawn; his deceased brother Marvin’s children, Judy, Belinda, Jackie, Frank, Tamze and Mary Ellen; his deceased sister Marie’s children, Michael, Danny and Joyce; and his caregiver, Peggy Jordan.

Funeral services will be 11:30 a.m. Monday at the Tracy Brammer – Monroe Funeral Home, Ironton, with pastor Pat Hoeksema officiating. Burial will follow in Woodland Cemetery, Ironton, with military graveside rites provided by the VFW Post 8850. Ruth Addis

Feb. 19, 1932 — Feb. 4, 2016

Ruth E. Addis, 83, of Ironton, passed away Thursday, Feb. 4, 2016, at her daughter’s residence in Proctorville. The Lawrence County native was born Feb. 19, 1932. She was preceded in death by her parents, Wilford and Shirley Waugh Jenkins; and an older brother, Glenn Ray Jenkins. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Lee Addis, whom she married in 1953.

Mrs. Addis was a graduate of Pedro High School, class of 1950. She was an EEG technician for the Lawrence County General Hospital and retired in 1989. She was a member of the Ironton Elks Club and the Democratic Women’s Club.

Ruth enjoyed bass fishing in tournaments with her late husband. She also enjoyed playing bingo, euchre and socializing with her friends.

She is survived by her daughter, Toni (Mike) Johnson, of Proctorville; her son, Craig (Tara) Addis, of Huntsville, Alabama; her sister, Helen Pemberton, of Ironton; three grandchildren, Chris Ainsworth, of Liberty Township, Casey (Cole) Alford, of Huntsville, Alabama, and Dustin Addis, of St. Petersburg, Florida; and great-grandchildren, Phillip and Calvin Ainsworth, of Liberty Township, and Charlie and Cameron Alford, of Huntsville, Alabama.

Gladys Turley

Sept. 12, 1934 — Feb. 5, 2016

Gladys C. Turley, 81, of Pedro, died Friday, Feb. 5, 2016, at Community Hospice Care Center, Ashland, Kentucky.

Funeral services will be noon Tuesday at Slack and Wallace Funeral Home, South Point, with the Rev. George Cade and the Rev. Kenny Webb officiating. Burial will follow at Lawrence Cemetery, Pedro.

Gladys was born Sept. 12, 1934, in North Kenova, a daughter of the late Henry Marlin and Edith Bailey Runyon. She attended Pine Grove Freewill Baptist Church and Hickory Grove Community Church.

Gladys is survived by her husband, Tim Turley; her children, Deborah (Rick) Morgan, of Ironton, Brenda (George) Cade, of Pedro, Danny (Pamela) Turley, of Washington Court House, and Timothy (Ruthie) Clifton Turley, of Pedro; one sister, Maxine (William) Spurlock, of Kitts Hill; three half-sisters, Diane, Marsha and Cathy; two brothers, Marlin Runyon, of South Point, and Charles Runyon, of Florida; four half-brothers, Eugene, Gaylord, Dexter and Carlos; nine grandchildren, Rickie Morgan, Jennifer Wilds, Donna Hall, Kevin Cade, Emily Jenkins, Kelli Elder, Daniel Scott Turley, Vicki Turley, Timothy “David” Turley and James “Austin” Turley; and 13 great-grandchildren. She was known as “Little Mamaw” to her grandchildren.
