D-fence. D-fence.

You can hear the chant often at games and the Fairland Lady Dragons must have been listening Saturday.

The Lady Dragons turned in a strong defensive effort as they ran past the Bishop Fenwick Lady Falcons 64-32 at the Tackett’s Body Shop Shootout at the Ironton Conley Sports Center.

Fenwick was only 11-of-37 from the field for 29 percent and committed 21 turnovers against the Fairland defense.

“I was really impressed with us on the defensive end. We came in with a game plan where we felt we needed to stop (Amanda Michael). She was taking 40 percent of their shots and I think she had one at halftime,” said Buchanan.

Fairland (18-3) was led by Emily Chapman with 16 points, six steals and four assists. Jackie Wagner added 10 points and eight rebounds and Allie Marshall had nine points.

The Lady Dragons dominated the boards 33-21.

Michael and Sara Kohls had eight points each for Fenwick.

Fairland led 15-8 at the end of the first quarter but erupted for 26 points in the second quarter while holding Fenwick to just six.

A layup by Wagner, a foul shot by Chapman, a putback by Wagner and a three-point play by Emma Fulton opened up a 38-14 lead at the 1:14 mark and the lead was stretched to 41-14 at the half.

“We wanted to push the pace because it didn’t seem like they wanted to run up and down the floor,” said Buchanan. “The big part of our game is to try and get a defensive rebound and turn it into offense.

“I don’t know how many transition points we got, but when you’re playing offense against a defense that isn’t quite set you have a much better advantage.”

Fairland slowed the tempo in the second half but still led 56-23 at the end of the third quarter.

Fairland is tentatively scheduled to host Jackson on Monday for senior night.
