CANTON — What Trey Fletcher didn’t know didn’t hurt him. But once he knew, it certainly didn’t hurt anything.

Unknowingly the 6-foot-6 junior forward for the Walsh University Cavaliers reached a milestone in his college career when he made his second basket at the 11:55 mark of the first half in an 85-76 win over Lake Erie on Feb. 6.

Fletcher became the 39th player in Walsh history to score 1,000 career points with that basket. He also had 1,000 career points when he played at Ironton High School. Parents Monica and Joe Fletcher were keeping a running total at Walsh.

“I didn’t keep tabs on it. My parents called and told me they were keeping tabs on it. My dad said he didn’t tell me because he didn’t want my head to get too big,” Trey said with a laugh.

For the game, Fletcher was 7-of-10 as he finished the game with 24 points. He was honored prior to the Cavaliers’ next home game against Tiffin.

“It’s feels good. It’s just a lot of hard work. I never thought I’d get 1,000 (points) in college. I was just glad to be put in a position to score the ball,” said Fletcher.

The Walsh basketball standout noted that high school and Walsh teammate Zac Carter — Ironton boys’ all-time leading scorer — will eclipse 1,000 career points next season.

But for now, Fletcher, Carter and their teammates are focused on the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament scheduled to begin on Tuesday. Walsh will play No. 1 seed Saginaw Valley.

“They are in the North Division so we only played them once. We were up 18 at halftime and lost,” said Fletcher of the 94-89 setback. “When the playoffs start, anything can happen. I’d rather play the best team first.”

Fletcher had a strong game on Thursday when Walsh beat crosstown rival Malone 80-56. Walsh (14-12, 12-10) won a record ninth straight game in the series and retired the Mayor’s Cup a third consecutive time, a first for either team in the 52-year series.

“Coach always tells us that this is a big rivalry game and that we better win,” said Fletcher who had 19 points and nine rebounds in the win.

Carter finished with 15 points and six assists.
