Thomas Whaley

April 22, 1923 —April 6, 2016

Thomas H. Whaley, 92, of Ironton, passed away Wednesday, April 6, 2016, after a brief illness. He was born April 22, 1923, in Russell, Kentucky, the son of the late Ray and Minnie (Cablish) Whaley. He was also preceded in death by one brother, Ray Whaley; two sisters, Evelyn Higgins and Margie Johnson; and one daughter-in-law, Jan Whaley.

Tom was a World War II Army Air Corps veteran. He was a retired chemist with the Barrett Division of the Allied Chemical Corporation. A 1941 graduate of Ironton High School, he was a member of the Knights of Columbus Watterson Council 1405, and attended St. Lawrence O’Toole Catholic church where he was active with the Holy Name Society. Tom was an avid bowler, a fan of the Cincinnati Reds and Bengals and enjoyed attending St. Joe High School sporting events.

Married 66 years, he is survived by his wife, Marie Loretta Geswein; a brother Bob (Ruth) Whaley, of Proctorville; and eight children, Mike (Patty) Whaley, of Westerville, Pat (Jane) Whaley, of Bellefonte, Kentucky, David (Donna) Whaley, of Ashland, Kentucky, Eileen (Ed) Payton, of Ironton, Rich Whaley, of Ironton, Larry (Maria) Whaley, of Ironton, Mary Anne (Matt) Bokovitz, of Gallipolis, and Andy (M’lissa) Whaley, of Ironton. Papaw has 23 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be at O’Keefe-Baker Funeral Home from 10 a.m.-noon. Monday Mass of Christian burial will be at 1 p.m. at St. Lawrence O’Toole Church, with Father David Huffman officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Lawrence O’Toole church, the St. Joseph High School Athletic Fund, or Community Hospice of Ashland, Kentucky.

 

Sue Knipp

Jan. 16, 1938 — April 6, 2016

Sue A. Knipp, 78, of Wheelersburg, formerly of Pedro, passed away Wednesday April 6, 2016, at the Concord Health and Rehabilitation Center in Wheelersburg.

She was born Jan. 16, 1938, a daughter of the late Rose Crum Reaper and the late Ernest Reaper.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert Lee Knipp; four stepchildren, Jane Lewis, Beth Lewis, Terry Knipp and Jerry Knipp; four brothers, Gene, Bill, Lester and Joseph; and three sisters, Marjorie, Carol and Bayotta.

She is survived by a daughter, Melissa Dalton; a son, Gregory Scott Knipp; a stepson, Anthony Knipp; a stepdaughter, Tina Stafford; a sister, Mary Lou Malone; three grandchildren whom she raised, Crystal Loeber, Billy Lewis and Charles Lewis; and a host of family and friends.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday in the chapel of the Brown Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Jim Lee Cremeans officiating. Sue will then be laid to rest next to her stepdaughter, Beth, in the Lawrence Furnace Cemetery.

Friends may call one hour prior to services at the funeral chapel. The family has entrusted her care to Brown Funeral Chapel.

 

Chauncey Black

Chauncey Lee Black, 76, of Chesapeake, died Thursday, April 7, 2016, at St. Mary’s Medical Center. He is survived by his wife, Sharon Black. Arrangements are pending at Hall Funeral Home in Proctorville.

 

Gene Shipley

Charles Edward Conwell, 80, of Harlem, Georgia, formerly of Burlington, died Thursday, March 31, 2016, at his residence. Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church of Burlington.
