Richard Morrison

Nov. 2, 1927 — April 8, 2016

Richard Lee Morrison, 88, of Ironton, passed away Friday, April 8, 2016 at the Hospice Care Center in Ashland, Kentucky. The Carter County, Kentucky, native was born Nov. 2, 1927, a son of the late Robert Lee Morrison and Ethel Thompson Morrison.

Mr. Morrison was a U.S. Navy World War II veteran serving from 1945 through 1948 and received the World War II Victory Medal and the American Theatre Ribbon. He retired in 1981 from the maintenance department at the Ironton Coke Plant and he and his wife were the former owners and operators of The Cake Shop on Fifth and Pine streets in Ironton. He was of the Baptist faith.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Martha Ann Carroll Morrison; a daughter, Deana Lynn White; sister, Virginia Barnett; half sisters, Beatrice Sargent, Atlas Houck, Lorrain Moore; and half brothers, Roy Morrison and Ray Morrison

He is survived by son, Stephen Lee (Peggy) Morrison, of Ironton; six grandchildren, Ryan Morrison, Jeremy Morrison, Aaron Morrison, Zachery Morrison, Amber (Lyle) Ray, and Nathan (Tammy) White; and half sister, Thelma Thompson, of Sacramento, California.

Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday in Woodland Cemetery with military honors provided by VFW Post 8850 and the Rev. Richard Carter officiating. Michael Layne

Nov. 11, 1944 — April 9, 2016

Michael Thomas Layne, 71, of Ironton, passed away on Saturday, April 9, 2016, at his residence. The Ironton native was born Nov. 11, 1944, the son of the late Harold Thomas Layne and Ruth Smith Layne. Michael was a former teacher.

He is survived by his wife, Carol Hall Layne, whom he married Aug. 10, 1970; son and daughter-in-law, Jeremy and Jami Layne, of Ironton; daughter and son-in-law, Joy and Charles Whitt, of Ironton; four grandchildren, Sarah Layne, Matthew Layne, Charles Whitt and Carson Whitt; brother and sister-in-law, Gary and Ann Layne, of Guadalajara, Mexico; seven nieces and nephews; and seven great nieces and nephews

Mary Baker

Oct. 16, 1951 — April 9, 2016

Mary Beth Baker, 64, of South Point, passed away Saturday, April 9, 2016, at her residence. The Bluefield, West Virginia native was born Oct. 16, 1951, the daughter of Joan Rowe Mason of Ironton and the late Joseph Gordon Mason II. She is survived by her husband of 20 years, Mark Edward Baker, whom she married April 6, 1996.

Mary Beth was a 1969 graduate of Ironton High School and graduated from Miami University of Ohio with her master’s degree in education. She was a middle school teacher for the Ironton City School System, where she taught the talented and gifted program, retiring after 35 years of service. She also enjoyed traveling, performing and the theatre.

In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by a sister, Sharon Kay Bentley.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by a brother: Joseph “Joe” Mason, of Cincinnati; three nieces, Mariah Bentley Nierman, Audrey Kay Nierman, both of Columbus and Mary Page Mason, of Cincinnati; and a nephew: J.G. Mason, of Cincinnati;

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Phillips Funeral Home with the Rev. Patrick Ryan officiating. Burial will follow in Highland Memorial Gardens and visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Velma Singer

Velma Sue Singer, 60, of Chesapeake, died Monday, April 11, 2016, at St. Mary’s Medical Center, Huntington. A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday at Miller Memorial Gardens, Miller.
