AID — This was a pitcher’s game.

C.J. Corns pitched a one-hitter to lead the Portsmouth Notre Dame Titans to a 2-0 Southern Ohio Conference win over the Symmes Valley Vikings on Monday.

The Vikings’ Chayden Renfroe pitched an excellent game but was saddled with the loss. He worked six innings, struck out eight, walked four and allowed just one unearned run.

Renfroe also doubled in the seventh inning for the Vikings’ only hit.

“We had runners in scoring position but couldn’t get the hit we needed,” said Vikings’ coach Chad Renfroe.

“But their kid did a nice job. He’s pretty good. Both defenses played well. Chayden threw well and Corns threw well. They just had a few more hits. I was proud of my guys. They battled all night.”

The Titans broke a scoreless tie with an unearned run in the fifth.

A missed third strike put a runner on and Drew Cassidy had a two-out RBI single.

Notre Dame got an insurance run in the seventh when Hayden Baker and Tyler Speas singled, a hit batter loaded the bases and a walk forced in the run.
