The old adage “the squeaky wheel gets the grease” is never truer when it comes to Lawrence County’s Chamber of Commerce Legislative Day.

This Wednesday will be the 30th year for the event, where economic development leaders from all walks in the county go to the Statehouse in Columbus to meet with our legislative representatives.

Here, those representatives get to hear what is going right in our end of the state. Like the almost completed Ironton-Russell Bridge. Or the Portsmouth Bypass that will impact Lawrence County as well as Scioto.

It is also a chance for those same legislators to hear what we would like to see happen. Like the Chesapeake Bypass.

The chamber gets a bus and fills it with the best and brightest in the county, who get a chance to pick each other’s brains on the ride up and back.

There are also breakout sessions where leaders and legislators can devote time to specific topics.

On top of the usual sessions on transportation and economic development, there will be a session on addiction — an affliction that has tragically gripped this part of the state.

The idea behind that is to brainstorm with our representatives to come up with concrete solutions to a problem that is literally killing people here.

Dr. Bill Dingus, executive director of the Lawrence Economic Development Corporation, has said over and over how receptive our representatives are to Legislative Day and how much success it brings to Lawrence County.
