CHICAGO — Adam Duvall just wanted to earn some respect. Not only did he accomplish that goal, but in the process he earned something else.

Duvall’s performance the first half of the season has earned him a berth on the National League All-Star team.

“I just try to play the game hard and try to earn the respect of my peers,” said Duvall. “Obviously, they thought a lot of me by voting me in, and I appreciate that. I think that’s one of the best ways you can get voted in — by your peers. I’m pretty proud of that.”

Duvall is tied for second in the National League with 22 homes runs. He has also driven in 59 runs and boasts a .559 slugging percentage. He is hitting .259 on the season.

Reds’ manager Bryan Price had nothing but praise for his 27-year-old outfielder both offensively and defensively.

“Very well deserved,” said Price. “Really a nice honor as a manager to be able to give that type of news to a young guy like Adam who is in his first full season in the big leagues and has had a huge first half — really a superior left field and a guy that has made the position his own and carved out a nice niche on the ballclub for us.

“We’re all happy for him. It’s a great thing for our organization and certainly for Adam.”

The Reds acquired Louisville, Ky., native from the San Francisco Giants at the July trade deadline for pitcher Mike Leake as the organization began its rebuilding process.

Duvall was in a battle with Scott Schebler for the left field job in spring training and earned a roster spot. He was being platooned with Schebler before he began to create distance between the two with his offensive production.

Duvall’s selection was somewhat of a surprise considering rightfielder Jay Bruce was having a banner season with 18 home runs, 62 RBIs and a .564 slugging percentage. He has a .268 batting average.

The only other Reds’ candidate was shortstop Zack Cozart — a slick fielder — who is coming back from knee surgery and is batting .269 with 13 home runs and 37 RBIs. He has scored 48 runs.

The All-Star Game will be Tuesday, July 12, in San Diego and televised by Fox Sports (WVAH-TV 11 locally).
