DOVER — It was quite a ride. Unfortunately, there was a slight speed bump on Thursday.

After losing in their opening game of the 9-10-year-old state tournament on Monday, the Ironton All-Stars had battled back to play in the semifinal game of the loser’s bracket.

But that ride ended on Thursday as Boardman edged Ironton 10-8.

“We came out and hit the ball hard and got a decent lead,” said Ironton manager Travis Wylie. “In the later innings we couldn’t produce runs or contain their momentum offensively.”

Out of 147 teams entered in the Ohio 9-10-year-old division, Ironton finished fourth.

“Though we lost tonight we did want to leave an impression on the kids about where they ended up,” said Wylie. “Several things came out of this trip and it’s something to build on for these kids.”

Ironton played well enough to win and appeared to have the game in hand by building an 8-1 lead.

But Boardman scored six times in the fourth to trail 8-7 and then got three runs in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead.

Ironton out-hit Boardman 15-9 but had two errors and gave up five walks.

Braden Schreck, Maddox Vass and Connor Kleinman all swung big bats for Ironton with each going 3-4. Schreck had two doubles and a run batted in, Vass a double and an RBI and Kleinman had a double.

Jonathon Wylie and Tommy Sheridan each went 2-4 with Sheridan getting a double and an RBI.

Hunter Freeman was 1-2 with a double and two RBIs, Brady Moatz 1-1 with an RBI and Owen Johnson added an RBI.

“Our coaches and players would like to thank everyone who helped with this trip either from donations or support becaue it is our privilege to represent Ironton and we take pride in that,” said Travis Wylie.
