McDERMOTT — Talk about evenly matched.
It took a penalty kick to decide the winner of Thursday’s soccer game between the St. Joseph Flyers and Northwest Mohawks.
Evan Throckmorton scored on a penalty kick to give Northwest a 1-0 win over the Flyers in the final regular season game.
“Both teams played well. You hate to lose a game on a penalty kick but that happens in this game,” said Flyers’ coach Mike Balestra.
“Our kids never game up and kept fighting to the last second. Our last-second shot just went wide of the goal. The team should be proud of the season they have had so far this year. Now it’s time to concentrate on the tournament.”
Flyers’ goalkeeper Bradley Rist racked up 19 saves while Zach Smith of Northwest had nine.
St. Joseph had 20 shots on goal, one corner kick and 11 fouls. Northwest had 29 shots, three corner kicks, seven fouls and two offside penalties.
St. Joseph is now 12-3-1 and hosts New Boston at 11 a.m. on Saturday in the Division III sectional tournament.
