OK, better but…
After a disappointing performance in a season-opening loss to Coal Grove on Monday, the St. Joseph Female Flyers gave a better showing on Wednesday only to fall just short to the Sciotoville East Lady Tartans, 63-57.
“The thing I liked was our effort. Several times were got down eight to 10 points and kept coming back,” said St. Joseph coach Nick Miller.
“We cut our turnovers down (27 to 14) and we put the ball in the basket. It was a better all-around game than Monday.”
St. Joseph (0-2) had three players in double figures led by Morgan Turner with 19 points including four 3-pointers. Kaitlin Sheridan and Megan Riley scored 12 points each.
Alyson Johnson had five rebounds for the Female Flyers with Riley and Sheridan getting four each. Turner and Johnson had four assists each and Sheridan three.
Johnson came up with three steals and Sheridan two.
Shay Brown scored a game-high 28 points and Peyton Helphenstein got 18 to lead East (1-1).
East took a 12-8 in the first quarter lead and both teams scored 15 points in the second quarter.
Riley scored 10 of her 12 points in the second quarter while Brown had 8 points for East as the Lady Tartans led 27-23 at the break.
Sheridan came out with a hot hand to start the second half and scored 9 points while Johnson added 6 more for the Female Flyers.
But Helphenstein scored 12 and Brown had 6 as East took a 47-40 lead at the end of the third quarter.
Turner stepped up and hit three trifectas and scored 11 points as the Female Flyers got within two points.
But Brown had 12 points including eight foul shots as East held on for the win.
St. Joseph will play St. Patrick at 6:30 p.m. on Friday in the St. Patrick Catholic Classic. The second game has Whitesville Trinity vs. Piarist School.
