Chesapeake girls rally past Trojans

PORTSMOUTH — This game was all about control.
Portsmouth took control in the first half but the Chesapeake Lady Panthers took over in the second half to get a 46-42 Ohio Valley Conference win on Monday.
The Lady Trojans were up seven points at halftime. The Lady Panthers used a strong defense in the third quarter to get the lead and the win.
“Portsmouth is a much improved team. In the first half they controlled the game and put us in the hole, but we battled back and got control in the second half,” said Chesapeake coach Chris Ball.
“Hall and Murphy got in foul trouble so we had a lot of people who contributed tonight.”
Natalee Hall and Dominique Murphy — Chesapeake’s top two scorers — sat out periods of the game in foul trouble before fouling out in the fourth quarter.
Hall finished with 13 points and five steals while Murphy had 10 points. Brooke Webb grabbed 10 rebounds.
Semajah Parker had a game-high 16 points to lead Portsmouth. Jasmine Eley added 11 points.
Parker scored eight points in the first quarter as Portsmouth took a 12-8 lead. Murphy had four points for the Lady Panthers.
Hall and Murphy scored four points each in the second quarter but the Lady Panthers still trailed 25-18 at the half.
Chesapeake held the Lady Trojans to three points in the third quarter and tie the game at 28.
Jozy Jones scored all five of her points in the fourth quarter for Chesapeake while Hall, Stapleton and Webb were all 3-of-4 from the foul line.
The Lady Panthers were just 14-of-25 from the line for the game but they were 10-of-16 in the quarter.
Eley hit a pair of 3-pointers in the quarter and Parker added five more points.
Chesapeake plays Cabell Midland at 9 p.m. on Wednesday at Huntington High School. The Lady Panthers host Ironton on Thursday. Portsmouth entertains Fairland on Thursday.
