It takes some good numbers to make the All-Ohio baseball team.
Daniel Rutherford and Zac McGraw had really good numbers.
Thanks to some strong statistics, the Ohio High School Baseball Coaches’ Association selected Rutherford and McGraw to their All-Ohio teams.
Rutherford — the Coal Grove Hornets’ senior outfielder and pitcher — was named to the Division III first team for the second straight year. He will play in his third all-district game next week and he will play in the Mizuno All-Ohio Series the following week.
Rutherford — who has signed a full scholarship with West Virginia State University — put up impressive numbers despite many teams trying to pitch around him.
This season, Rutherford led the Hornets with a .500 batting average and a .654 on-base percentage. He stole 17 bases, walked 27 times — second most for Coal Grove player since 1980 — and struck out just eight times in 52 at-bats.
He had 16 extra base hits including five doubles, three home runs and his seven triples were the most in a season for the Hornets since 1980.
In his four-year career, Rutherford batted .447 with 110 hits, 12 triples, eight home runs, 67 runs batted in and 45 stolen bases.
His pitching record was 5-2 this season and 20-10 for his career. In 53.2 innings, Rutherford struck out 85 with 33 walks this season and pitched two no-hitters. He had 259 strikeouts — third most in Hornets’ history — with an 0.65 earned run average. Teams batted just .114 against him.
McGraw is a four-year starter for the St. Joseph Flyers and was named to the All-Ohio Division IV team as an honorable mention selection.
McGraw posted a .500 batting average (24-of-48) on the season with nine doubles, a triple, 17 runs scored, 23 runs batted in and 11 stolen bases.
Defensively, McGraw threw out 43 percent of potential basestealers.
McGraw will play in the coaches Southeast District all-star game next week.
