There will be a chance for people to get checked for diabetes at the Ironton City Center  from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Monday.

The Ironton Health Department is doing screenings as part of November being National Diabetes Awareness month.

“I would love for everyone to come down and have their blood sugar, cholesterol and blood pressure checked,” said Laura Brown, the Ironton Health Department’s health commissioner. The screenings are free.

One in 10 Americans has diabetes, which can cause a host of medical issues including nerve damage, kidney disease, and blindness.

Some of the symptoms of diabetes include feeling very thirsty, frequent urination, extreme fatigue, blurry vision, feeling hungry even though you have just eaten, bruises or cuts that are slow to heal and tingling pain or numbness in feet or hands.

“Diabetes is so prevalent. If there are 10 people in the room, one of them is at high risk to get diabetes,” Brown said. “This event is free. It’s a good thing to come out and get educated about diabetes and what you can do to help yourself prevent diabetes or detect it so you can get treatment before it causes problems.”

The Ironton Lions Club is sponsoring the health fair.

Among the organizations that will be there, besides the Ironton Health Department, are Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital’s Community Health Services, the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office, Unger’s Shoes, Rite Aid pharmacy, the Area Agency on Aging, Patriot Ambulance, Genesis, Community Action Organization’s medical group.
