Hayven Carter of Franklin Furnace won the 8-9-year-old Division of the district Elks’ Hoop Shoot foul shooting contest last Saturday in Newark. Hayven won the local competition in Ironton in December. Hayven now advances to the state championship in Gahanna on Saturday, Feb. 17. Hayven is the daughter of D.J. and Abby Carter and the granddaughter of former basketball coach Mike Hughes. She is a third grade student at Portsmouth Elementary where her aunt Amy Hughes is the high school principal and former head coach of the Ironton Lady Fighting Tigers and Rock Hill Redwomen.
